		<description>

Earth is a founding motif in conceptions of the formation of Brazil and of Brazilian identity. Hegemonic representations of nationality were historically structured by idealized and racialized views of nature that subalternized native peoples and Afro-Brazilian populations.
Earth is also paramount in the cosmologies, philosophies and narratives of the Indigenous and Black populations that make up the greater part of the national cultural matrix. In this approach, concepts and representations of earth appear in a form that is radically distinct from modern colonial constructions. They point to another meaning of earth and territory—as belonging, cultivation, right, reintegration and reparation—and thus to other imaginaries of Brazil, whether in the past or in the future, as heritage and project, as archaeology and design.
Titled Terra [Earth], Brazil's representation for La Biennale di Venezia 2023 is based on this latter perspective for thinking of Brazil and the world—as earth. Earth as soil, ground, roça [swidden], territory, terreiro [yard or cult-houses], but also in its global and cosmic sense, as planet and common house of all life, human and non-human. Earth as ancestry and future, looking at the cultural, artistic and landscape heritage built by Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian populations as a way of expanding the field of architecture in the face of the most urgent contemporary urban, territorial and environmental issues.
Following the teachings of the thinker and Indigenous activist Ailton Krenak, we assume that "the future is ancestral", that is, that the ancestry of these spatial technologies show us a possibility of a future world, new but already present, where repair and restoration are constituent parts of the same architectural and planetary utopia, at once local and global.

		<description>ATERRAMENTO

In presenting a different history of Brazilian architecture and its heritage, the curators could not fail to challenge the neutrality of the space in which it is inserted: the very architecture of the Brazilian Pavilion at Giardini.
The pavilion is a building of iconic modernist heritage, designed by Henrique Mindlin, who was a referent in the construction of the ideology of national modernity, reifying the idea that Brazil’s architectural tradition was of European origin.
In critical dialogue with this heritage and its legacies, the curators set out with a series of site-specific interventions that we call “aterramento”.
A new earthen floor covers the entire pavilion, alluding to the traditions of Indigenous and Quilombola homes. In gratitude to all the Oris who shared their ancestral knowledge, the second gallery is adorned with Costa cloths made by the Alaka weavers. It evokes the flags that adorn the candomblé shacks, protecting and embellishing the pavilion.
Around the outside, a set of railings with Sankofa designs reconfigures the pavilion’s minimalist facade.
A ubiquitous element in Brazilian residences throughout the country, the design of these railings was markedly influenced by African diasporic knowledge. They functioned as communication systems between Black communities, referring to symbologies of myths from their places of origin.
One of the most emblematic adinkras is the Sankofa bird, a bird that looks to the past while flying to the future. Sankofa announces a curatorial gaze that turns to memory and to the future at the same time, an archeology that presents itself as a project.
The audience is invited to set foot on the earth, recognizing Brazil as an ancestral and diasporic territory. By coming into contact with the earth, the public is also invited to reflect on their condition as planetary inhabitants, from local to global, from earth to Earth.

In recognition of the excellence of its work in promoting national culture over its more than sixty years of operation, the Federal Government has granted the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo the honor of choosing the curatorial team and producing the exhibitions that are held in the Brazilian Pavilion—a building that has welcomed visitors to the Biennale di Venezia since its inauguration in 1964. To be alongside the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in another International Architecture Exhibition has a special place in this historical moment, which poses great challenges for a world in constant transformation and that seeks answers to the most urgent questions that arise from the relationship between society and the space it inhabits. By putting the public in direct contact with the ground made of the substance that gives it its title, Terra turns to practices of African and Indigenous origin recognized today as Brazilian heritage and that contribute to the contemporary debate in a double movement: that of reparation in relation to a buried ancestral legacy, but which surfaces as a concrete alternative for the collective construction of a future that transcends borders.

Brasília, a capital modernista projetada pelo urbanista Lucio Costa e pelo arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer no final da década de 1950, é em essência uma cidade colonial. Lucio Costa atribuiu o plano diretor de Brasília a “um ato deliberado de posse (...) um gesto de sentido ainda desbravador, nos moldes da tradição colonial (...) dois eixos cruzando-se em ângulo reto, ou seja, o próprio sinal da cruz”.&#38;nbsp;

Brasília, the modernist capital designed by urban planner Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer in the late 1950s, is in essence a colonial city. Lucio Costa attributed Brasília’s masterplan to “a deliberate act of possession… a gesture still in the sense of the pioneers, along the lines of the colonial tradition… two axes crossing at right angles, that is, the sign of the cross itself.”

Brasília was meant as a modern conquest of the interior, re-enacting—in modernist fashion—the gesture of white European colonizers. The definition of Brasília as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO still relies on this colonial perspective, attributing the city’s cultural and historic value to the fact that it was built ex nihilo, that is, “out of nothing.”

This room presents a counter-narrative to the canon. Contrary to the frontier imaginaries that informed the design and construction of Brasília, this land is ancestral Indigenous and Quilombola territory. Before colonial invasion, the region was a place of encounter and exchange between various Indigenous nations of Central Brazil. Since the 18th century at least, it started to be populated by enslaved refugees and freedom in the quilombos.

Nowadays, located about 50 kilometers south of the capital, there are the lands of the Quilombo Mesquita, established three hundred years ago. The Kalunga territory, the largest quilombo in the country, is located 250 kilometers north of Brasília. Quilombola communities inhabited this entire territory, and played a central role as labor force in the construction of the new capital. Recognized by the UN as a model of environmental conservation, the Quilombo Kalunga is also a “landscape construction” of inestimable patrimonial value for humanity, and for the planet.

In 1957, president Juscelino Kubitschek orchestrated a catholic mass in Brasília’s construction site to mark its inauguration, which was attended by various state authorities. Inspired by the painting Primeira missa no Brasil [First Mass in Brazil] (c. 1860) by Victor Meirelles, the so-called “First Mass in Brasília” was meant to re-enact the mass celebrated in 1500 by the Portuguese at Bahia, which symbolically marked the possession of Amerindian territories by the Portuguese Empire in Brazil. Kubitschek ordered the Brazilian Air Force to bring Karajá people to attend the mass, monumentalized in the “Square of the Crucifix” at the city entrance by a replica of the original wooden crucifix. This monument gives meaning to the entire landscape of Brasília, and reminds the colonial foundation of Brazilian modernity.

It is from the earth that we question the custom of assuming that the place of the lived experience of Indigenous and Black people in Brazil is the underground of history. The fixing of these subjects far from the ground where social life really takes place has been a valuable device for updating the politics of memories that authorize the subdimensioning of the presence and the agency of population majorities, reduced to the condition of “the other”.

As sung in the verses of Ilê Aiyê, in "every piece of ground, every stone set" there is the mark of men and women who can no longer be thought of as being dissociated from projects for occupying spaces that claim to be democratic in a country like ours. An emblematic example of this challenge is the national capital itself: Brasília, and why not, the Federal District as a whole.

"It was born of a primary gesture of one who signals a place, or takes possession of it." When speaking of the landmarks of Brasília, the urban planner Lucio Costa associated the original outline of his work with the sign of the cross. The new capital would represent the fulfillment of a long-standing desire to have a symbol, at the center of the country's territory, of the strength of its best men, willing to fill the void and overcome the harshness of the new land.

These expressions of a long-lasting linguistic-cultural repertoire of domination were strong symptoms that, in the 1950s and 1960s, the modernist pretensions of politicians, businessmen, architects and urban planners—the spokespersons of the hegemonic memory of this enterprise—would announce the updating of exclusionary projects of Brazil. Similarly to what happened at other times, Brasília and the Federal District were not dreams dreamed of with room for everyone.

In times of unity and reconstruction, one must have the eyes to see the obvious: the struggles of Black populations and Indigenous peoples for land rights, in the country and in the city, exist in profusion as an inspiration for best practices for the world's architecture.

The photographs selected from the collection of the Arquivo Público do Distrito Federal are an invitation to this inflection.
